Kristen Schiele
“My Dream is Yours”

Exhibition: March 13 to April 12, 2008
Reception: Wednesday, March 12th, 7 to 9 pm

Sloan Fine Art is pleased to present the gallery’s first solo exhibition: “My Dream is Yours,” new works by Kristen Schiele:

The all-female cast of Kristen Schiele's new paintings and collages exist in a disjointed, cinematic dreamscape. Influenced by the highly stylized and macabre sensibility of the Italian filmmaker Dario Argento, these heroines confront the viewer directly as they define a new strategy of power in environments that traditionally serve only to circumscribe their identity. Lurid interiors depict women caught in a psychological matrix, playing games - both internally and literally. Broad swaths of bold color are contrasted with the intricate details of chessboards, Victorian frames, TVs, and frozen silhouettes. The artist’s paint surfaces, sophisticated networks built with etched paint, and taped, cut and silkscreened canvases, further enforce the experience of navigating through shattered and reclaimed domestic environments, where the abject and stereotype give way to a renewed and empowered feminine presence.

Kristen Schiele has lived and worked in both the Untied States and Germany. She received a BFA from Indiana University and MFA from American University and studied at the Hochschule der Kunste in Berlin. Solo exhibitions and projects include the Soap Factory in Minneapolis and Curators Without Borders Gallery in Berlin, Germany. She has participated in group shows at Caren Golden Fine Art in New York City, Portland Institute for Contemporary Art (PICA) in Oregon, and the Corcoran Museum of Art in Washington D.C, among others. Schiele also participated in the Bronx Museum’s Artist in the Marketplace program, completed a residency at the Provincetown Work Center, the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council and is currently a resident at the Lower East Side Printshop.
